The 22-year-old cut from Portugal who could be reborn in the Premier League
Dropped from the Portuguese national team, 22-year-old Antonio Silva is in talks with Bournemouth — a club with a track record of producing elite defenders.
It seemed like only a matter of time. At 18, Antonio Silva was already scoring in the Champions League for Benfica — in a 4–3 win over Juventus — and shortly after he was at the 2022 World Cup representing Portugal. The script read like a star in the making.
Then the script changed.
At 22, Silva was left out of Portugal's squad this European summer. The momentum that had seemed unstoppable went cold. And now, according to Sky Sports, it is Bournemouth who are set to sign him, after a deal was agreed in principle with Benfica.
A modest destination for a player once coveted by the continent's giants? Perhaps at first glance. But Bournemouth have a concrete argument: the club has become a reference point for developing defenders. Illia Zabarnyi left for PSG. Dean Huijsen moved to Real Madrid. Marcos Senesi agreed terms with Tottenham. All of them passed through the south coast of England before making the leap.
João Nuno Fonseca, who coached Silva through Benfica's youth ranks, makes no effort to hide his optimism. "Marco won't have any problem with him," Fonseca told Sky Sports. "Antonio is a very good person and the kind of player who is easy to coach. He is very attentive."
The 2026 World Cup is on the horizon — and Portugal, according to the Golmetria model, have a 100% chance of advancing from the group stage in Group K. But earning a place in the squad demands playing time, and playing well. A solid season in the Premier League could be exactly what Silva needs to reclaim his spot.
The talent was never in question. The question now is whether Bournemouth will be the place where he reminds the world — and Fernando Santos, or whoever is in charge of Portugal — that the 18-year-old boy is still here.
