Cape Verde Made History at the World Cup — Now They Face Messi and Argentina

The smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup knockout stage will take on Messi and Argentina in the Round of 16. The story the world stopped to watch.

Original Golmetria data graphic about Argentina's World Cup odds, in premium data-journalism style; no real photos, no real-person likenesses, no crests.

A goalless draw with Saudi Arabia. A phone on the pitch. And when the final whistle blew in Guadalajara confirming Spain's victory over Uruguay, an explosion of tears, embraces and ten-starred flags that no one will forget any time soon.

Cape Verde are in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup — and they will face Lionel Messi's Argentina.

The archipelago of 530,000 people has just become the smallest nation in history to reach the knockout stage of a World Cup. It was no fluke: three matches played at the highest level. A draw with Spain on matchday one, with 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha as the hero. A 2–2 draw with Uruguay, two-time world champions. And now qualification as runners-up in Group H.

"It wasn't just one game against Spain, it was three games at the highest level," said Juan Mata, former world champion with Spain, to ITV.

The secret? The Cape Verdean federation bet heavily on the diaspora — players born or raised outside the islands, but who wear the Blue Sharks shirt with heart and soul. They qualified ahead of Cameroon, five-time African champions. That says it all.

On the other side of the bracket waits Argentina, the reigning champions and heavy favourites. Golmetria's model gives the Argentinians a 20% chance of lifting the trophy — the highest of any team in the tournament. Cape Verde know the challenge is monumental. But they have already proved that the impossible is just a matter of time.

"Nothing is impossible," the dressing room spirit was summed up. And who is going to bet against them now?
