The Portuguese referee reflected on his World Cup in an interview with Canal 11 and treated the episode with Argentina's captain exactly as he sees it: routine on-field business. "What happened with Messi happened with other players too," Pinheiro said, without mincing words.
The moment came during the quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland, which ended 3–1 to the Albiceleste. In the footage that circulated at the time, Messi appeared visibly heated, telling the referee: 'Speak to me properly, don't disrespect me.' Pinheiro, unmoved, let the game flow.
In the interview, the Portuguese official explained the context without any drama: "Team captains usually talk a bit more, and the new rules allow for that." He went further — pointing out that this kind of exchange happens at every level of football, from the Champions League to the third division. "Of course, when it's Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, these situations are seen in a different light," he acknowledged, while stopping well short of admitting anything out of the ordinary had occurred.
