Kane with 6 goals, Haaland with 7 — which one would you pick in this quarter-final battle?

With Kane on 6 goals and Haaland on 7, the two best strikers in the world go head to head in the World Cup quarter-finals. Who comes out on top?

Original Golmetria data graphic about England's World Cup storyline, in premium data-journalism style; no real photos, no likeness of real people, no club crests.

Six goals on one side. Seven on the other. Harry Kane and Erling Haaland arrive at the World Cup quarter-finals as the two most lethal strikers on the planet — and now they have to face each other.

The irony of it all is rather beautiful. Back in August 2021, Kane almost joined Manchester City. The deal never went through. The following summer, it was Haaland who arrived in Manchester — and led the club to the Treble. Kane stayed at Tottenham, trophy-less, carrying the image of a world-class player who had never won a thing.

The script has since been rewritten. Since swapping the Premier League for Bayern Munich in 2023, Kane has won the German championship twice and claimed the European Golden Boot on two occasions. He is no longer the eternal runner-up. He is the captain who delivers when the game is on the line — two goals against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of sixteen, plus a cool penalty at the Estadio Azteca to knock out Mexico.

And Haaland? Born in Leeds but Norwegian at heart, he arrives at his first World Cup with seven goals and absolutely no intention of letting the English captain outshine him.

Any comparison between the two inevitably starts with goals — and on that front, both men are fighting for the title of best in the world. Kane has already scored 85 times for the England national team since netting on his third touch in a Three Lions shirt, back in March 2015.

The Golmetria model gives England a 10.84% chance of lifting the trophy — a figure close to what the market projects. The road ahead is still long, but it runs straight through stopping Haaland this Saturday.

Two number nines. One semi-final spot. Which one would you pick?
