Mbappé vs Haaland at the World Cup: the rivalry football has been waiting for is finally here

France and Norway meet in Group I with the two deadliest young scorers on the planet facing each other at a World Cup for the very first time.

Original Golmetria data graphic about a World Cup novelty, in premium data-journalism style; no real photos, no likeness of real people, no club crests.

Messi and Ronaldo are still on the pitch, but the throne already has two claimants — and they are facing each other at a World Cup for the first time.

Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are, according to Sky Sports, the only players in Europe aged 30 or under with at least 250 career goals. Two players operating on a completely different level from everyone else. And now, with France and Norway meeting in the final round of Group I, their duel becomes the most anticipated match of the group stage.

Both sides have already secured their place in the knockout rounds. That opens the door for resting key players — but with the Golden Boot up for grabs, who would dare leave either of these two on the bench? Both have already found the net twice in their first two games.

The rivalry does not yet carry the same fire that Messi and Cristiano lit during the Barcelona and Real Madrid years, not least because Mbappé and Haaland play in different leagues. But the numbers place them side by side at the very top: one European Golden Boot each, symmetrical career trajectories, and a hunger for goals that has no parallel in their generation.

What each one still lacks is precisely what the other has already won. Mbappé lifted the World Cup. Haaland won the Champions League — a trophy the Frenchman has never got close to.

The Golmetria model sees France as a genuine title contender, with a 12.05% chance of being crowned champions. Argentina leads the projections at 18.05%.

The question that lingers: when Mbappé and Haaland meet in the knockout rounds — if they get there — which one will blink first?
