Mbappé Can Match What Only Cafu Ever Did — and He Says the Record Means Nothing Without the Trophy

France face Spain for a spot in the 2026 World Cup final. Mbappé can equal Cafu's historic feat as the only player to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals.

There is a record kept for decades waiting for Kylian Mbappé — and it belongs to a Brazilian.

Cafu remains, to this day, the only player to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals. A starter for Brazil in 1994, 1998 and 2002, the right-back built a feat that has outlasted entire generations. Next Tuesday, in Dallas, Mbappé has the chance to get there — but for that to happen, France must beat Spain and secure a place in yet another final.

Champions in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, the French are trying to join an extraordinarily exclusive club. According to ge, only two national teams in history have strung together three consecutive finals: Brazil between 1994 and 2002, and Germany in 1982, 1986 and 1990. In total, only four players have lived that feat — Matthaus, Littbarski, Cafu and Ronaldo.

On the French side, Dembélé and Lucas Hernandez are also in the running, but with asterisks: Dembélé did not play in the 2018 final, and Lucas Hernandez was injured in the group stage in Qatar. Only Mbappé started both finals — and wants to start a third.

But the number 10 himself made a point of putting the record in perspective. "This team is neither world champion nor runner-up," said Mbappé, making it clear that statistics without a trophy fill nothing.

The Golmetria model gives Spain a 59.72% chance of reaching the final — making them the favourites. France come in at 25.83%. The market, meanwhile, sees the Spanish as the leading candidates to lift the 2026 World Cup trophy.

If France advance, their opponent in Sunday's final in New Jersey will come from the clash between Argentina and England. Cafu's record could fall. But Mbappé has already given his warning: it will only matter if the trophy comes with it.
