Montella puts his foot down before Turkey's final match: 'I will not resign'
Turkey's head coach fires back at critics, defends his players, and makes clear he will not walk away from the job after their 2026 World Cup elimination.

Turkey are already out of the World Cup, but Vincenzo Montella has not left. And he made it crystal clear that he has no intention of doing so.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Thursday's match against the United States in Los Angeles, the Italian head coach went straight to the point. Pressed on the defeats to Australia and Paraguay — which ended Turkey's campaign in the tournament — Montella dismissed any talk of a voluntary resignation. "I put my heart on the line. If anyone expects me to resign, they should accept that. Because I will not resign," the coach said, according to ge.
And he went further. "I still have energy, I still have enthusiasm," Montella added, also revealing that he has the backing of the Turkish federation and of the players themselves.
But the sharpest moment of the press conference came when the subject turned to his squad. In Montella's view, the criticism that rained down on his players was far too harsh and deeply unfair. "Our players received a lot of severe criticism and were affected by it," he said. In his eyes, the national team deserves far more recognition for the work done over recent years — it was thanks to this group, he argued, that Turkey reached consecutive tournaments.
Now, with elimination already sealed, the match against the USA is little more than a formality. On the other side, the hosts take to the field with their place in the round of sixteen virtually assured — Golmetria's model puts the Americans' chances of advancing at 100%.
For Montella, though, Thursday's game is almost beside the point. The real battle is a different one: convincing Turkey that he is still the right man for the job. And he has already made one thing perfectly clear — he will not be walking away on his own.
