Palmeiras lead by eight — yet the model still says Flamengo are Brazil’s strongest team

The gap at the top is the biggest of this Brasileirão season. Yet the latest Golmetria Index update still sees an open title race. Here is the math — and what has to happen for it to change.

On the table, the conversation sounds over. Palmeiras won 4-0, Flamengo stumbled again — a 1-1 draw with Internacional, after already being held by São Paulo — and the gap at the top reached eight points after round 21, matching the biggest lead of this Brasileirão season, according to Band and Coluna do Fla.

In the market of opinions, eight points at this stage sounds like a verdict. Golmetria's model, however, has not signed it yet.

In the latest Golmetria Index update — the July 28 simulation run, before round 21 — Palmeiras stood at a 43% title chance against Flamengo's 36%. A clear edge, yes. A done deal, no. And the most provocative detail sits in another column: strength. The Index, which measures expected performance from the quality of chances created and conceded, still rates Flamengo as the strongest team in the country at 1670 points — above even Athletico (1624) and leaders Palmeiras themselves (1608).

How could a team six points behind at the time carry almost the same projected end-of-season points? The model's answer had three parts. First: on the performance numbers, Flamengo create more and concede less than the average scoreline suggests — and performance tends to catch up with results over time. Second: Flamengo have a game in hand, the postponed match against Mirassol, worth up to three invisible points. Third: nearly half a season remains — and across the model's 5,000 simulations, leads of this size still evaporate uncomfortably often.

The other side of the ledger deserves saying too. Points on the board never come off it. Palmeiras do not need to be the best team in Brazil to be champions — they only need to manage a lead that, historically, at this stage, is decisive in most scenarios. And that round-21 rout suggests a leader at cruising speed, not one in decline.

The model runs again after every round, and the next update should move the needles Palmeiras' way — probability reacts to results. The strength Index does not: it moves slowly, because it measures six months of performance, not one weekend. That is precisely the duel deciding this title: Palmeiras' table against Flamengo's performance. Flamengo return on August 9, against Vitória, at the Maracanã.

The Index is a starting point for analysis, not a prediction of the outcome.
