Over 81,000 People Want the World Cup Final Replayed — and the Spaniards Who Signed Will Make You Laugh
An Argentine fan launched a petition with over 81,000 signatures demanding a new final between Argentina and Spain. The Spaniards who signed it became the butt of the joke.
The World Cup final is over — but for Gisela Sánchez, it isn't finished yet.
The Argentine fan created a petition demanding that Argentina and Spain return to the pitch, this time without Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic. According to Record, she claims Vincic had a direct influence on the outcome of the match. By the time of publication, the initiative had already gathered more than 81,000 signatures — and the number kept climbing.
Gisela did not specify which incidents she believed were poorly officiated, but she went beyond the sporting controversy. "This is not only a matter of justice for Argentina, but for world football," she said, according to Record. She added: "If we allow corruption to go unnoticed on this global stage, we are setting a bad example for future generations."
The petition is titled, without mincing words: Replay the World Cup final, Argentina–Spain, without the corrupt referee.
But the detail that became a joke was something else entirely. Among the more than 6,000 messages on the petition, some Spanish supporters decided to sign — in a mocking tone. "They robbed us of a valid goal and I believe that, if the Argentines hadn't been so aggressive, we might even have won by more goals," wrote one of them, as reported by Record.
FIFA has not commented on the request, and no federation has recognised the petition as valid. In practice, the chances of a final being replayed due to public pressure are zero.
But that isn't going to stop anyone from signing.
The World Cup is already over — it's just that the debate about what happened on the pitch will last far longer than any trophy.
