One week. That is how long it took Lionel Scaloni to put into words what he felt after watching Argentina lose the 2026 World Cup final to Spain, 1–0, in New Jersey.

"I am sorry for not being able to bring home another trophy," Scaloni wrote, apologising to Argentine supporters. The coach described the week as a rollercoaster: sadness, joy, tears, smiles, anguish and calm all colliding since the final whistle.
But the passage that resonated most was his shot at the critics. In capital letters, Scaloni spoke of enduring "buckets of cold water from people who do not know us" — and declared that standing firm through all of that, even when your legs refuse to obey, is the "real trophy."
The players, whom he called "my warriors," were praised for their commitment and perseverance. Scaloni also thanked his coaching staff, AFA employees, and the supporters who embraced the team after the defeat. He closed with a line that captures the mood perfectly: "Whoever has an Argentine friend has a treasure."
What remains unresolved is Scaloni's own future. His contract expires in December, and he had already cast doubt on his continuity in the immediate aftermath of the final. The AFA wants to extend his deal through 2030 — but he did not touch on the subject in the letter.
Argentina had been chasing back-to-back titles following the 2022 World Cup. Golmetria's model had given the team a 68% chance of reaching the final — and they got there. It just was not enough against a Spain side that the model itself had flagged as favourites.
