On the stage set up at Cibeles Square, when the time came to call Yéremy Pino forward for the celebrations, the presenter couldn't help himself: "They used to call him Cristiano Ronaldo, but this one actually won the World Cup," he said, before completing his introduction of the Spanish forward.
The dig at the Portuguese superstar landed like a bombshell. According to A Bola, the moment is "causing some controversy" — and it's not hard to see why. Mixing a title party with a jab at CR7 was, to say the least, bold.
Pino, who also won the Conference League, became the unwitting symbol of a rivalry that never needs much to reignite.
And Portugal? Golmetria's model had already seen the outcome coming: Spain entered the tournament as the overwhelming favourite, while Portugal went no further than the quarter-finals.
