Dibu Martínez admits he'd never felt this before: the silent crisis of the world-champion goalkeeper

With a fractured finger and five goals conceded, Dibu Martínez admits dissatisfaction with his 2026 World Cup performances and wants to rediscover his best against Switzerland.

He saved Argentina in the Qatar final. He stopped penalties against the Netherlands and France. He became the symbol of a generation. But at this World Cup, Emiliano Dibu Martínez is uncomfortable — and he isn't hiding it.

After Argentina's 3–2 comeback win over Egypt, the West Ham goalkeeper was brutally honest. "I'd never had this feeling of going home without having contributed to the team," he said, according to ge. "I think my moment will come."

The comparison with 2022 is harsh. Four years ago, Dibu had conceded just three goals by the time the quarterfinals arrived — and with one fewer game, since the round of 32 was only introduced now. In 2026, he has already let in five, four of them in the knockout stage alone: two against Cape Verde, two against Egypt.

But there is context that explains part of the problem. During the warm-up for the Europa League final, Dibu fractured the ring finger on his right hand. He played through the injury, missed the pre-tournament friendlies, and arrived at the World Cup still recovering. "The physio must have taped my finger about 75 times," the goalkeeper revealed. "I didn't have surgery and it was the best decision."

Dibu himself is trying to keep his head straight. "There will be a match along the way where we don't suffer as much," he said. And he wants that match to come right away — against Switzerland, next Saturday in Kansas City.

Golmetria's model gives Argentina a 22.3% chance of winning the title — the highest of any side still in the tournament. To get there, the Dibu who conquered the world in 2022 needs to show up. Argentina may be able to advance without him at his best. But to be champions again, they will need the goalkeeper the world knows.
