Tigre went to Montevideo, won 3-0 and unfurled the Malvinas banner — just like the national team
Tigre players echoed the Argentine national team's gesture after a 3-0 win over Nacional-URU in Montevideo in the Copa Sudamericana.
It wasn't the Argentine national team. But the script was exactly the same.
After beating Nacional-URU 3-0 in Montevideo in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana playoff round, Tigre's players unfurled a banner on the pitch: "The Malvinas are Argentine." In the stands, their supporters joined in, chanting "anyone who doesn't jump is English."
The gesture is a faithful copy of what the Argentine national team did after beating England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final. On that occasion, according to ge, FIFA reprimanded the players and signalled that disciplinary measures could follow.
The controversy has deep roots. Argentina and the United Kingdom fought an armed conflict in the 1980s over sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands — known as the Falklands by the British. The war lasted 74 days, between April and June 1982, and left 907 people dead: 649 Argentines, 255 British and three civilians from the islands. Control of the territory remains with the British to this day.
On the 2026 World Cup front, Argentina and England appear among the favourites for the title. Golmetria's model gives the Argentines a 6.92% chance of lifting the trophy and the English a 6.76% — figures that are close, but the rivalry between the two countries goes far beyond probabilities.
